Magpie Tales: Slip Slidin' Away

This prompt photo filled me with a sense of impending disaster.

Running away as fast as she can, her right leg is out-thrust confidently; her right foot just above the road poised to land squarely and surely. The unpredictable left leg hangs in the air slightly out of focus.   Her left foot is a blur, as unsure as a cat at the door. There it goes....that shaky left foot hits the slippery curb, teeters half on and half off, her knee twists, her leg crumples and as she falls her relentless husband's hand grabs her shoulder and pushes her down hard.

And, I know a woman
Became a wife
These are the very words she uses to describe her life
She said, “A good day
Ain’t got no rain”
She said, “A bad day’s when I lie in bed
And think of things that might have been”
Slip slidin’ away
Slip slidin’ away
You know the nearer your destination
The more you’re slip slidin’ away
Lyrics by Paul Simon from "Slip Slidin Away"

  1. This bit of well constructed prose is spine tingling ...

  2. Shivers. Was she running away from an abusive husband? (I am sorry if it is contrary).

    1. Yes, the idea of an abusive husband jumped off the page into my head. I wish I'd picked a happier theme.

  3. I hope she can get away next time... I hope her husband falls and hits his head, I'm willing to put my feet in his way...
