April 24th, 1942. London: At dawn yesterday, a young woman identified as Erica Carter was struck and killed by an automobile as she was posting a letter in the Spitalfields neighborhood, according to a Scotland Yard spokesman. Killed instantly, Carter was pronounced dead by ambulance attendants at the scene. The driver of the automobile is being held pending further identification.
Detectives speculate the driver, after accelerating rapidly from the end of the road, lost control of the automobile's steering. When he applied the brakes, he claims the car skidded on the slick roadway surface and struck down the unsuspecting Miss Carter, who was deaf from birth. There were no other automobiles on the roadway at the time. The driver had dropped off his wife and he claimed he "was in a hurry to get to work on time."
According to her parents, Miss Carter, a canteen worker with the WAV, was on her way to her job when she stopped to post the letter. Engaged to Flt Lt John D. Garrows RAF, currently posted in Gibraltar, Garrows and Carter were to be married in December of this year.
