Sepia Saturday 303: Reflecting on Halloween

I was unaware of the Halloween and mirror combination. Old Halloween cards often featured the theme. Here's a few I found online to sort of match the prompt.

Looking for a photo with a mirror involved, I found one of my sister yet again...here she is on her wedding day, glancing away from the mirror for a moment. At this point, she had her husband all sewed up, waiting for her in the church so she knew who her lover was going to be. And the day wasn't Halloween, it was earlier in the year - September. She was happy and the wedding was perfect. At this particular moment however, she may have been experiencing cold feet; don't all brides get the last minute jitters? Here's where I insert my corny poem, a la the greeting cards.
"Mirror, mirror on the wall,
Shall I go? Or shall I stall?
Okay, okay...I'll get my veils
Can I come home if all else fails?"

  1. She looks lovely. I heard a story that featured a mirror and a future bridegroom, but I remember nothing else about it.

  2. I hadn't heard of the Halloween mirror connection before either. You did well to find so many related cards. I remember the wedding photographer too a photo of me getting ready in front of the mirror but I threw it out because I didn't like how I looked. I didn't like too many of his photos actually, and they have all turned that dreadful orange colour now, which doesn't improved them. Your sister's photographs are beautiful.

  4. Nice job nicely done! Finding all those Halloween postcards was a great idea & certainly matched the theme. Your sister's wedding dress is gorgeous, and she was a shining beauty in it!

  5. Beautiful dress! And perfectly captured in the mirror.

I never thought of mirrors as spooky, but the notion of seeing something in the mirror that isn't actually there is chilling.

  6. Vintage postcards and posters have such an appeal and you found some great examples to match the theme. The bridal photographs of your sister are beautiful and I had to laugh at your poem.

  8. Glad to know I'm not the only one who'd never heard of this mirror thing (lover in the mirror); but you've found several great cards and a few real shots to emphasize it -- good post!

  9. I didn't know about that mirror connection to Halloween either - and the prediction of your future husband. Interesting!

  10. A fine collection of '20's - '30's cards. The artwork is distinctive.

  11. I collect a lot of postcard topics, but not Halloween (too expensive). So, I was surprised how many Halloween postcards featured that same theme.

  12. There's a whole world of stuff going on here that I had no idea about! People must collect them though judging by Postcardy's comment.

No doubt about it. Brides always look beautiful and happy.

  14. Mirrors never featured in Halloween in our house either (Ireland) - the only clue to a future husband was heralded by the ring in the barmbrack! Lovely collection of pictures.
